Last Minute Thoughts

No, I am not going to list all that I am grateful for, did that last year.  Still holds true now, just counting my blessings each and every day, not just on Thanksgiving.

I made two soups, butternut squash and chicken, baked two pies, pumpkin and coconut custard, made cranberry sauce, baked sweet potatoes and prepped the stuffing.  Still have lots to do.  May not even get to sleep tomorrow night!

We are getting lots of rain and wind, temps are holding so far in the 40's, but tomorrow night the temp will plunge by 30 degrees.  I really don't get this crazy weather.  It was a beautiful, mild fall.  I guess it wants to go out in a big way.

We will be six on Thursday.  The oldest guest is 98, the youngest, yours truly, is 59.  Makes me chuckle to think of that.  My strategy this year was the spirit of enough.  Making do with things I have.  I tried to change some side dishes, but no go, my old standards are requested.  I am not making mashed potatoes, I was told they are not necessary (I think so).  Oh well.  I may make some over the weekend just to make turkey croquettes.

I resisted the urge to run to Bed, Bath & Beyond to buy a tablecloth or napkins. I shopped locally rather than a fabulous specialty food store and orchard where things are double the price.  I do believe it will be enough.  I hope so, anyway!  No crafts, recycled some fall decorations, keeping it simple.  I am happy I accomplished what I did.  I can't wait to get a lap top, I miss photos so much.

Hope all my readers and friends have a very blessed and very happy Thanksgiving.  If you can't all be together this year with your family, there is always next year.  Or Skype.  Be safe with the crazy weather affecting 20 states and the entire East Coast.

Love you!

xo

  2. Barbara, this is absolutely the sweetest Thanksgiving post that I have read! I know your guests will be thankful for you and I am sure that your table with be filled with love and laughter. The storm came through here, but was really a "no show" with just a little rain. I hope that it will not be too terrible there. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your guests!!

  3. Hi Barbara,

We love you too. :) I'm glad to see this post -- I MISS you! I'll also be glad for you to get a laptop so you can post more regularly. Your Thanksgiving meal sounds just right, my friend. All the things that I like. Do you know, my mom has never made mashed potatoes on Thanksgiving because she made sweet potatoes instead. However, my MIL makes both, and now I look forward to that. I seriously love mashed potatoes, so I agree with you on that.

I do hope you get some sleep tonight so that you can somewhat enjoy yourself tomorrow. I know it's hard to do when you're hosting and preparing most of the food. I'm thankful for you and my other blogging friends this year, and I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving.

    Hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor

  8. No mashed potatoes? One of my favorite things... I am making pecan and chocolate cream pie. That's it. I sent John to the library pie sale for apple. I'm sure some very nice lady made the beautiful pie sitting on the buffet. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving with or without mashed potatoes. ; >

  15. Dearest Barbara;
I DO hope you and your guests are having or had a wonderful special meal you cooked. (oh, how I wish to be your guests) As you may guess (or naturally) we don't pay much attention for this occasion in Japan. I admire your efforts to your guests, my friend♡♡♡

PS> Thank you so much for all of your sweet comments for me. Haha, I psted the wrong page name from the word. I have realized a lot later and changed it.
Please have a relaxing days after Thanksgiving.

Lots of Love and hugs from Japan, xoxo Miyako*

  18. I hope you had a very Happy Thanksgiving, Barbara! Your menu sounded delicious. I overcooked but I love leftovers, so that's ok. The weather was gorgeous here today --we did not even need a coat! We decorated outside for Christmas and now I have to get busy with ther inside. We will be getting colder weather by mid week as an arctic blAST is coming down on Wednesday...brrrr.

  19. You sound just like me this year. No "new" linens or anything, just a simple (yet, I thought pretty) Thanksgiving here. Your food sounds wonderful, and if you haven't already posted the recipe for your butternut squash soup, I'd love to have it. If you have, I'd love the link to the post. I had some recently and fell in love with it. I'd like to make some myself.

  20. All in all, I think it sounded like you had an absolutely perfect Thanksgiving! I didn't do any of the shopping either, we really cut WAY back on the food, and had only 3 at the table this year as others went visiting other sides of the family. Totally quiet, laid back and peaceful . . . . wonderful! PS: Barbara, your blog template for Christmas is simply beautiful!!!!!

  21. Your Tksgiving sounds like it was amazing and perfect too! The food is making me hungry from just Reading about it! We don't celebrate Tksgiving here, but some of us Americans do our day of thanks the following Satuday, so I had lots of food too. Have a lovely holiday season. You made my day.

  23. Good morning, Barbara! So nice popping in to visit. We had six at our Thanksgiving dinner too. Extra small for us but our one daughter was visiting her twin sister in NY. It was way more quiet and still cozy and fun.

Hope you are staying warm with the snow and frigid temps!
