Checking in

No year end wrap up, no most viewed post, not even a word for 2014!  No resolutions, other than to take each day as it comes, less planning equals less tension, less stress!

I have meant to do a post, but as I have mentioned, blogging without photos is like rambling......I guess I need the reinforcement of pictures to prove I did something.  Crazy but it is true.

I survived Christmas barely, came home sick as a dog from breathing in two days'  worth of second hand smoke.  Rude, inconsiderate in-laws of my friend hosting the two days.  I am very allergic to tobacco smoke.  Still have a terrible cough.

Winter is not playing nice at all, we are dug out of about 8 inches maybe more with drifting here, and the frigid temps are keeping me a prisoner even longer than I would like.  I hope to get out by Monday!

A sweet blogging friend sent me a delicious jar of  Christmas jam along with a microwave bag for potatoes.  I can't wait to try it with sweet potatoes.  It was such a nice surprise.  I will keep it anonymous.

I also won a beautiful 2014 Susan Branch calendar from a giveaway hosted by Nellie at the blog Berries and More.  Wish I could provide a link, but cut and paste only pops up when I don't need it, like when I am on Facebook!

I got to bake about five kinds of cookies, and just today tossed out the leftovers.  They held up pretty good but were definitely past their prime.  Tins are cleaned and ready to be put away until next year.
I also baked an eggnog pound cake which I found on Pinterest.  I liked it, and made four mini ones rather than one large one.  My friends seemed to enjoy it.

My toes are feeling so much better.  I really need to get to the podiatrist but between being sick and then the snow and frigid temps, well,  it is really a drag!  Can't wait for spring to arrive.

Hope this finds all of you well, warm, cozy, and enjoying your Christmas presents.  I still have two to give out!   Aye yay yay, but then again, I have two more to look forward to!

Thanks again to Linda Primmer (Life & Linda) for the new blog header!  I will keep this for a while, love it.

Happy, healthy 2014!

xo

  2. Love your new header! So appropriate! Sorry you're not feeling well. This weather is about to do everyone in. We're suppose to get snow tonight. I'm really not a happy camper about it either!

    Stay warm and well!

  3. I have been missing you, my friend, and now I know why! I hope that you are on the road to recovery and the road (hoping the snow goes soon...). If it makes you feel any better, the temperature prediction for middle Georgia Tuesday morning is 9 degrees - yep, "9"!! For us, that is crazy cold. I will try to think about you with all of the snow. Love your new header and I hope that your 2014 is going to be a great one!!!

  4. Glad your toes are getting better, and you are home safe and sound. Those small pound cakes sound yummy.

  5. Yup. That header is a keeper! Linda is so talented.

Glad that you survived Christmas. January is all about recovery, isn't it? I smiled to read that you made egg nog pound cake. I used up the rest of ours on Norweigian pancakes. Egg Nog adds a liitle something extra for sure.

Hope that the weather moderates and that you're able to get out and about when you want. I just realized that I have been in the house since the Saturday before Christmas. Good heavens! Two weeks.

What a sweet gift and a nice win. I love SB calendars and don't have one...yet...this year.

  7. I am so sorry to hear about your reaction to second-hand smoke! Very thoughtless of those hosting to subject guests to this.

Hopefully the snowfall - plus the other one that is coming - will not give any problems for you. Cold temperatures are on the way here, too, as well as the mention of snow!

I send along wishes for quick healing of your toes and also wishes for a happy 2014! xo

  9. Barbara, I'm so sorry you haven't been feeling well ... tough time of year to be burdened with sickness. Your header is lovely -- very you! Happy New Year to you! :)

  12. Hi Barbara,
As much as I enjoy blogs with photos, I really enjoyed your post today. It is so nice to hear from you. When we don't hear from our blog friends occasionally, it's easy to worry about them (at least for me).
I am sorry to hear that you had to suffer due to someone else's secondhand smoke. That seems so inconsiderate to me. I'm not allergic to it, but I detest the smell.
I hope you are able to get out and about soon. I sense a bit of cabin fever. Although I've been out of Michigan for 14 years, I remember thinking I would go crazy if the winter didn't end soon when I lived there.
Your new header is charming. Makes me think of you and your two little birdies.

  13. You're header is terrific and a keeper. I'm happier after my blogcation and was content to skip my "wrapup." Hope you're feeling 100% very soon.

  14. Nothing gets my asthma going worse than cigarette smoke. People are SO inconsiderate.

  15. Oh yes, that header is fabulous! It's so perfect for you!

Sorry to know that you have not been feeling well. My dad was sick on Thanksgiving; my mom on Christmas, so we missed both holidays with them this year, which makes me sad. But thankfully, they're both better...and I pray that you will soon be back to yourself too!

Eggnog pound cake...maybe with a cup of coffee...sounds SO good!

    Happy New Year to you!

  16. Hope the NYC weather improves soon and that you feel better soon, Barbara! I love your new header!
Our new year began with sadness. Even so, it has made me resolve to squeeze out more happiness this year than last year, as life is just too darn short!

  17. Too bad your friends didn't know better about their in laws and their smoking. It's miserable to have to put up with. We had to threaten to not visit my husbands parents home because of that problem. The smokers were forced to go outside when we visited and my kids didn't get sick anymore. I hope you didn't get too much snow there. I'm used to it up here but I know it's hard on areas that aren't used to it.

  18. Love your header. I think you are smart to just lay back and get well. Sometimes we need to just let your minds rest and there are so many pulls on us these days. Feel better!!

  19. I'm so sorry about the cough from the second hand smoke, Barbara. My parents both smoked when I was growing up and to this day, even when I see someone smoking on TV, I can "smell" it!!
I'm glad your toes are feeling better, but better not go out in the bad weather.
Happy New Year and I hope the spring arrives quickly for you! xo
p.s. I love the new header that Linda did!

  20. So glad you are doing better. I know blogging without photos is hard but we all care about how you are doing. Love the new header by the way! I'm finishing up the Christmas put away today and then on to more purging. It's so cold that staying inside for the next few days suits me just fine. Big Hugs and glad you had a good Christmas except for the 2nd hand smoke(awful, I am also allergic and know exactly how you feel).

  21. Oh..i love your new header with your two lovely birds.I' m so sorry about your cough. I hope you will be better.

  22. I like your posts very much. So sorry about your second hand smoke - I would have had to go home because I get very sick smelling that awful smoke. People are so rude. I have NEVER smoked a day in my life but guess what I have - COPD - thanks so much for second hand smokers.
So many of bloggers that I follow are where all the snow is - I feel so sorry for them when we are setting here with 75. I would probably freeze to death back in that cold or I would never go out of the house.
    Love your new header.
    Have a great week,
    Mary

  23. Some people are so inconsiderate with their smoking. I am allergic too so I know just what you mean. Hope you recover quickly.

Love your new header. It's so cute.

Stay warm and safe. I'm not going out unless I have to. The good thing is that it's supposed to get warmer the end of the week.

  24. I'm like you in that I can't tolerate second hand smoke. I'm glad your toes are feeling better..
I love the new header that Linda did!

  26. Hi Barbara! I'm so sorry you're not feeling well. Cigarette smoke does the same thing to me too. It's just awful! I hope you'll be feeling better soon. I love your pretty new header and it is so YOU!
Thanks for popping in to see me.

  27. Hello Barbara,

Ouch! Did you say that you threw away homemade Christmas cookies? (I think that's the unforgivable sin!)

Have a good week. Get well.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'm surprised you're not in the E.R.! Secondhand smoke can really do a number on you! There are still people who smoke indoors when non-smokers are present? Egads! That's so 1981! They need to get a clue...or at least strive to be better hosts!

Sorry your toes are giving you a fit! I understand that it's tough to drag yourself out of the house in this weather to have them seen to, though. I hope you can at least get comfortable.

Enjoy your new calendar and rest your tootsies! Feel better!

  29. I love your new header! It's perfect for you.

I hate the part about the smoke (feel the same way... rude rude rude!) and I really REALLY hate that you are physically still sick and hurting beyond that. The line about blogging without pictures being rambling made me grin because I feel the same way about my blogging even with the pictures.

I am stepping into 2014 with (hopefully) more balance in my life. It's a funny thing about toes. They are so small, yet when they are in pain it literally does throw your whole body (and life) out of balance. That's what I'm reading here so I hope and pray that you get to the podiatrist as soon as you can.

    In the meantime, REST!

  30. well...I am reading this on MOnday and you were hoping to get back out by MOnday.....something tells me you have not left the house....Don't feel bad....we were only 2 degrees warmer down here in Atlanta today....while you guys were at 12 below with the wind chill we were at 10 below....I finally forced myself to put on a coat and go take out the garbage can for tomorrow morning...two days of mail in the box....I even got the bright and early call from the girls in NYC this morning and told them....Grandma advises you to stay home today....I couldn't imagine poor little B out walking to school in that cold....shame on that new mayor....Stay warm!!

  34. Barbara, I hope you are doing better I know not having photos to post is a bummer. We all love you. I wish I could wave my magic wand. Second hand smoke is awful....it would make me sick as well.

  41. I think all of us that have been hit with sickness and this snowy, freezing weather are "in a mood" I was so happy over Christmas in Florida with the sun shining, I have barely seen it since coming home and when I do..it is too cold to go out! I am really trying not to wish time away...not smart as I get older, but I do long for a little less cold and a lot more sunshine!

  42. Hi Barbara,

I'm late getting by to comment, but things have been sort of hectic around here since the holidays. I'm still putting away Christmas decs and am ready to be done with that. I don't know if you know that we moved our son to Greensboro right after Christmas (New Year's Eve, actually). He came by and had dinner with us tonight.

I really LOVE your new banner; Linda does a good job doesn't she? I'm sorry you're still not feeling well and sorry about the cigarette smoke during your visit with friends. I really can't be around that at all these days since I have asthma. I so hope you can get another computer soon so that you can return to blogging in the manner that you would like. We miss you. :)

Take care of yourself and we'll be looking for you!

    Warm hugs,

    Denise at Forest Manor
